SBP Deploys Biometric Authentication of the Mobile Wallet Cash Transactions
On July 1, 2025 the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has directed cash transactions done using a mobile wallet, such as Easypaisa and JazzCash, to be biometrically enabled. The purpose of this regulatory change is to increase user security as popularity of digital financial service in Pakistan continues to grow.

What is New Under the Rule?
Since July 1, cash deposits and cash withdrawals at retail agents via Easypaisa or JazzCash should necessarily pass through biometric authentication. Agents are also being provided with the fingerprint scanners so that only the verified users can make transactions. Retailer points no longer use the non-biometric cash handling.

What does not Change?
The online wallet transactions do not change. Biometric checks do not prevent users to transfer money or pay bills and use the app features. Notably, none of the accounts will be frozen or blocked and the user funds are safe and accessible.

Gossips vs. Truth
SBP and wallet operators have stated that there are no truths to frozen accounts or disabled wallets. Biometric rule does not deal with digital activity but with cash funds transacted through real shops.

The Relevance of This Regulation
The biometric requirement is itself in the larger scheme of things on the part of SBP to enhance security, minimize fraud as well as safeguard the identity of the consumer. All transactions that are done physically using cash will now be associated with the fingerprint of the user, giving confidence and openness to the cashless economy that is on the rise.
